What Age Can Kids Start Jiu Jitsu?

What Age Can Kids Start Jiu Jitsu?

Parents ask us this almost every week, usually with a three-year-old bouncing next to them. The short answer: at Six Blades Jiu Jitsu South Denver, kids can start at age 2 with a parent on the mat, and join a group class on their own at age 3. The longer answer is that “ready” looks different at 2, at 4, at 6 and at 10, and the right program depends on where your child is, not on the birthday.

Ages 2–3: Parent & Me

This is where the very youngest start, and you’re on the mat with them. The Parent & Me class is built around movement, balance and simple games, with a little bit of jiu jitsu hidden inside. Your child gets used to the room, the coaches and the idea of a class, with you right there. Many kids move from Parent & Me into a group class around their third birthday; some take a bit longer, and that’s fine.

Ages 3–4: Tiny Grapplers

Tiny Grapplers is the first class kids do on their own. It bridges the gap between Parent & Me and full group training: short, playful sessions that build motor skills, balance, coordination and comfort with closeness, which matters in a contact sport. The goal at this age is that your child learns to follow a coach, take turns and enjoy being on the mat. Once they’ve got the basics and some confidence, they move up to Little Champs.

Ages 5–6: Little Champs

Here the jiu jitsu becomes more real. Using the Six Blades Method, we teach basic self-defense techniques and the first ideas of leverage and control, in classes designed for short attention spans: clear routines, positive reinforcement and gradual challenges. Kids start developing real independence at this age, learning to follow instructions, respect their teammates and build confidence through structured movement and play.

Ages 7–12: Juniors

Juniors is our core kids program. Classes follow a curriculum, so skills build week over week, and the emphasis is on safety, focus and character as much as technique. This is the age where parents most often tell us they see the change at home and at school: kids who handle frustration better, listen better and carry themselves differently.

Teens 13+

Teens train in our Adult & Teen program. The pace and the content are a real step up, and so is the responsibility. For a lot of teenagers this is the first physical activity that feels like theirs.

How do I know my child is ready?

Age is a starting point, not a rule. A few things we look at in the first class: can your child follow a simple instruction from someone who isn’t a parent, can they wait for a turn, and are they curious about the mat rather than scared of it. None of these need to be perfect. Kids grow into all three, and the class itself is where they practice. If your child isn’t ready yet, we’ll tell you, and we’ll tell you what to try in the meantime.

Is jiu jitsu safe for young kids?

Safety is the first pillar of the Six Blades Method, before anything else we teach. Young kids don’t spar the way older students do. Classes are structured, the mats are clean and soft, and the coaches are trained to work with each age group. Most of what a four-year-old does in class looks like a game, on purpose.
