Mothers, Daughters, and the Importance of Leading by Example

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time that reminds us of something important: taking care of ourselves matters.

For many mothers, however, that is easier said than done.

Women often spend years taking care of everyone around them — their children, their families, their careers, their homes — and somewhere along the way, their own health, strength, and personal development can move further down the list.

But our daughters are watching.

They notice how we speak about ourselves.
They notice whether we make time for our health.
They notice how we respond when something is difficult.
They notice whether we set boundaries, take care of our bodies, and continue challenging ourselves.

And very often, what they see becomes part of what they believe is normal for themselves.

Teaching Strength Without Saying a Word

We can tell our daughters to be confident.

We can tell them to be strong, independent, active, and capable.

But one of the most powerful ways to teach those things is to let them see us practicing them.

When a daughter watches her mother make time to exercise, learn something new, become physically stronger, or step outside her comfort zone, the lesson goes far beyond fitness.

She sees a woman who values herself.

She learns that becoming a mother does not mean giving up personal goals.

She learns that strength is something worth developing throughout life.

And she begins to understand that taking care of yourself is not selfish — it is part of being able to take care of the people you love.

More Than Physical Strength

At Six Blades, we believe Jiu Jitsu offers women something unique.

Yes, you become stronger.

You improve your mobility, coordination, balance, and conditioning.

You also learn practical self-defense and become more comfortable understanding distance, control, and how to respond under pressure.

But there is another kind of development happening at the same time.

You learn to stay calm when something feels uncomfortable.

You learn that struggling does not mean failing.

You learn how much more capable you are than you may have believed.

And those are lessons our daughters need too.

Imagine the impact of a young girl growing up watching her mother willingly challenge herself, learn how to protect herself, work through difficult moments, and continue improving.

That example can stay with her for life.

Growing Together

One of the things we love most about our community is seeing mothers and daughters share the martial arts journey.

They may train in different classes and have completely different goals, but they understand each other’s experiences.

They can celebrate new skills together.

They understand what it means when the other person comes home excited because something finally worked.

They learn that progress takes patience.

And perhaps most importantly, both understand that learning and personal growth do not have an age limit.

That creates a very different kind of connection.

What We Want Our Daughters to See

October is an important reminder to pay attention to women’s health and encourage the women we love to take care of themselves.

But that message can extend beyond one month.

We want our daughters to grow up understanding that their health matters.

Their strength matters.

Their confidence matters.

Their ability to protect themselves matters.

And their dreams and personal development should continue through every stage of life.

Sometimes the most powerful way to teach those lessons is simply to live them.

At Six Blades Jiu Jitsu South Denver, we are proud to create a place where mothers, daughters, and entire families can grow stronger together — physically, mentally, and as a community.

Because the example we set today may become the standard our daughters carry with them tomorrow.
