Before my daughter was even born, she already had two Gis (haha). I knew from the start that she would be on the mats, because I believe it’s important for every young woman to learn how to deescalate threats, recognize danger, and defend herself — not necessarily to fight, but to stay safe and confident.

She started playing at our school when she was just 2 years old, and began formal classes at 3. I never forced her to attend every week; I wanted her to feel it was her choice, but I was sure she would have a solid foundation on the mats at least until she goes to college.

Fast forward 10 years, and last week we rolled together. Tears came to my eyes seeing how much she’s grown — both in skill and in confidence. This year, she also began helping out with our Little Champ classes, and it’s amazing to see her natural gift for working with kids. The little ones love her, and I’ve even been told that many students have named their dolls after her!

There’s still a long road ahead for her to develop as a martial artist, but I couldn’t be prouder of her process, her growth, and the incredible human being she’s becoming.

At Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu, moments like this remind us why we teach — not just to build skills, but to build confidence, character, and a lifelong love for learning on the mats.

Join the Journey: Whether your child is 2 or 12, it’s never too early to start learning, growing, and gaining confidence on the mats. Sign up for a class at Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu and watch your child thrive, just like mine!
