At Six Blades Jiu Jitsu South Denver, we talk a lot about discipline, respect, and training hard. But there’s another key to success on and off the mats: hydration.

While we can go weeks without food, our bodies can only survive a few days without water. That’s because every cell in our body depends on water to function. When we’re dehydrated, it becomes harder to absorb nutrients, flush out waste, and keep energy levels high. For athletes of all ages—especially kids—hydration is essential for health, performance, and safety.

🚨 Signs of Dehydration

The first and easiest check: look at the color of your urine.

  • Clear or pale yellow = you’re hydrated.

  • Dark yellow or amber = time to drink more water!

Other warning signs include:

  • Bad breath

  • Less urine than usual

  • Dry mouth or swollen tongue

  • Feeling sluggish or tired

  • Cravings for sweets

Severe symptoms (seek help right away):

  • Confusion

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Heart palpitations

💦 Why Jiu Jitsu Students Need Extra Hydration

Training, sweating, and rolling make us lose water faster. Combine that with Colorado’s dry climate, and dehydration can sneak up quickly. Staying hydrated helps:

  • Keep cool during intense training or hot weather.

  • Support muscles & joints for smoother movement and fewer injuries.

  • Maintain focus & energy so you can train at your best.

  • Aid digestion and prevent constipation.

  • Control appetite, since thirst is often mistaken for hunger.

🥤 How Much Water Should You Drink?

The old rule says “8 glasses a day,” but the truth is—it depends. Factors like your age, activity level, and even the weather can change how much you need. If you’re training Jiu Jitsu, you’ll often need more than average. A good tip: keep a water bottle with you and sip throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty.

🌟 Stay Ready, Stay Healthy

Jiu Jitsu teaches us to be prepared for the unexpected. Staying hydrated is part of that discipline. Whether you’re a 3-year-old Little Blade or an adult competitor, water is your best training partner.

So, before and after class, make sure you’re drinking enough—your body (and your Jiu Jitsu) will thank you!
