The Americana, also known as the keylock or paintbrush lock, is one of the first submissions most Jiu-Jitsu students learn โ but its story goes way back!
This classic shoulder lock was popularized in Brazil during the early days of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, when visiting American wrestlers and judokas trained with the Gracies. Because those American fighters often used this lock, it became known in Brazil as the โAmericana.โ
Today, itโs a timeless submission โ simple, effective, and still used by world champions!
